Named for town of Waynesboro, Franklin County, PA. Previously part of Shenandoah limestone. Type locality is ridge north of Waynesboro. Composed of siliceous, ripple-marked, purple shale and flaggy calcareous sandstone.
Tends to be ironed stained. Flaggy sandstone and sandy shale at top of formation generally forms low ridge. The North Mountain fault is one of the largest overthrusts in the folded Appalachian mountain belt and serves as the boundary between the detached Massanutten-Blue Ridge overthrust sheet (i.e.
Great Valley and Blue Ridge) and Valley and Ridge fold structures in eastern West Virginia, northwestern. The Baker, Needmore and Wolf Gap minute quadrangles, are located in the Valley and Ridge province of Hardy County, West Virginia.
These quadrangles cover the geology of the Cacapon Mountain anticlinorium on the east and the Broadtop synclinorium on the west. The bedrock geology map of the Moorefield minute quadrangle covers part of the Valley and Ridge physiographic province in Hardy County, West Virginia.
